We met Uncle Devin Walker on a rainy Monday evening in October in Washington DC. We were producing a panel on The Changing Face of Children’s Music which also included Atlanta based DJ Willy WOW and Youth Education advocate, Denise M. Jones. Devin, who bills himself as “the Children’s Drumcussionist” brought a smile with his video teaching kids how to “Hambone”- but more importantly impressed us with his commitment to providing a music platform targeting children of the Diaspora. At the time he was featured weekly on his own talk show on WOL-AM discussing the merits of music for black and brown kids and pushing back on “music adultification” – you know, that’s when kids listen to music that is way too “grown” for their good! It turns out the staff at Pacifica’s DC mainstay WPFW were listening and have given him his own radio hour – and it’s not on a Saturday morning, either! A first for Children’s Music.
