Our Story

The Ovation Agency launched in 2017 when two dynamic forces in business joined together to create a boutique marketing agency to support Independent artistic creators and entrepreneurs. It was, in fact the second time the newly minted Co-managing Directors had worked together. Allison Perkins-Thomas, fresh from her 11 year stint as Sr. Development Manager for the JDRF and Thornell Jones, Jr, a revered music industry Marketing maven with a 28 year tenure in the Entertainment Industry had spent ten years together as the marketing heartbeat of the legendary boutique record label Hidden Beach Recordings. While at Hidden Beach the duo was responsible for projects which launched or enhanced the careers of several of today’s artist brands including Country super-star Darius Rucker, multi-platinum Grammy(r) winner Jill Scott, Soul Train Award nominees Kindred The Family Soul, The Unwrapped(tm) series, two Obama campaign compilations (Yes, We Can! and Change is Now), and a Starbucks Exclusive Christmas release by Grammy(r), Dove and Stellar Award winning Gospel Superstar BeBe Winans. To bring marketing fire-power to the boutique operation, Perkins-Thomas was principally responsible for developing partnerships with a myriad of brands including NASCAR, General Motors, Alberto-Culver, ORS, Grey Goose, Courvoisier, Hennessy, Ciroc Vodka, Johnson Publications, Nabisco, Subway, McDonalds, and Station Casinos.

Since launching the Ovation Agency in earnest in early 2017, the pair has received applause from clients for their innovative programs and activations.

95 Never Looked So Good

The first project as The Ovation Agency was film-maker Tymm Holloway’s documentary short “95 Never Looked So Good” which celebrated his father’s commitment to Family and his history as founding member of the U.S. Navy’s first All-black band, the “B1 Band.” After a rousing reception at it’s premiere at the Las Vegas Black Film Festival, the film has gone on the win Distinction at Canada Shorts, semi-final status in the Violetta Film Festival and ultimately winning Best Short at the Nevada International Film Festival.

Siedah Garrett - G.H.E.T.T.O.

The first music client to tap the duo’s genius was former RCA A&R Exec Erik Nuri who asked Ovation to mount an integrated awareness campaign for his wife and client Grammy winner and twice Oscar nominated Siedah Garrett. The campaign was to include events, Social Media editorial direction and content development, and appearances. On deck, the song “G.H.E.T.T.O. feat. Common”. An an acronym for “Greatness Happens Even Though There’s Oppression”, Ovation created a school based program in association with the Great American Smokeout in Los Angeles, Bakersfield and Oakland, CA. The single campaign coincided with the launch of the year long celebration for her #1 global anthem “Man In the Mirror” which was nominated as the Song of The Year in 1988. The effort received lift-off with an exclusive “Up Close & Personal” performance in association with the Grammy Museum.

Chance The Rapper

A surprise call from the producers of the ESPY Awards leveraged Ovation’s relationships on behalf of indie rap phenom, Chance The Rapper as he prepared for his moving tribute of Muhammad Ali on the annual awards show. Six months later, Ovation delivered again on behalf of Haight Brand management when Chance, along with gospel stars Kirk Franklin and Tamela Mann appeared on the 59th Grammy Awards backed by A-list singers assembled by The Ovation Agency.

Ray x Vivian Chew

Music and media power couple Ray Chew (DWTS) and Vivian Scott-Chew (Time Zone International) approached Ovation for their deep relationships in the community of music creators for the launch of their Two Beats, One Soul release. The CD and companion documentary film documents the music created during their historic cross cultural exchange between American and Cuban artists in Cuba. In addition to producing a VIP Showcase performance at Cuban culinary outpost Xiomara and a VIP Mixer at the historic studios at the Sunset Marquis, Ovation supported the awareness campaign with Social Media and Digital Advertsing.

George Clinton x Parliament Funkadelic

George Clinton, the legendary band leader of Parliament-Funkadelic first tapped the media relations savvy of Ovation during the Grammy’s in 2016 when he was nominated along with rapper Kendrick Lamar for Album of the Year. Later that year, during the opening of the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C., Dr. Funkenstein once again tapped Ovation to maximize their appearance during the museum’s opening festivities where the legendary Mothership was being revealed to the public for the first time in decades. An integrated communications strategy resulting in TV and Radio interviews, a Washington Post feature story, Digital Advertising, Social Media, and Lifestyle teams on America’s Mall resulted in a frenzy of awareness and lines literally around the block at the DC’s legendary 9:30 Club.

In May of 2017 upon announcement of his impending retirement, George Clinton’s grand daughter’s Kandy Apple Redd, launched their first official single “This Club” for which Ovation secured participation by Range Rover, which is prominently featured in the song lyrics. To leverage the “passing of the torch” moment provided by Clinton’s retirement announcement, Ovation conceived and implemented a College based program for the duo and their cousins – all of Clinton’s grandchildren – entitled “Growing Up P-Funk” showcasing their personal stories and development as professional musicians. So far, the program has been staged for students at Musicians Institute in Hollywood, CA and Full Sail University in Orlando, FL. The programs have been supported via Social Media editorial and FB Live Stream.

TOSOS Theatre company

When TOSOS (The Other Side of Silence), New York City’s oldest running LGBT Theatre company made the decision to diversify its offerings with the production of “Waiting for Giovanni” in the summer of 2018, The Ovation Agency was on board. The dream play by award winning author Jewelle Gomez imagines the internal conflict of James Baldwin, the famed literary giant, on the cusp of the release of his second novel “Giovanni’s Room.” In addition to VIP audience development utilizing Social Media and Digital Advertising tapping their New York network of celebrities and influencers, during the conclusion of the four-week run the duo produced a fund-raiser for TOSOS as James Baldwin’s 94th Birthday Celebration. Hip hair care purveyor Miss Jessie’s supported the effort.

ISOTOPIA Records

In 2018, international Opera star Constance Hauman brought The Ovation Agency on board to market the Isotopia Records roster. The label launched in 2015 been by Hauman for her first pop release Falling Into Now, was experiencing remarkable success with the Rock-Funk band Miss Velvet and The Blue Wolf, and Brooklyn based retro-pop band Baby Raptors. In addition to Industry awareness campaign during Awards season, Ovation is responsible for the label’s project launch plans in 2019 across all genres with responsibility across all channels.
